A Message Regarding Anti-Semitic Emails

A Message Regarding Anti-Semitic Emails

Dear Hillel Community,

As you may know, several anti-Semitic and racist emails were sent Tuesday night to students through undergraduate Computer Science and Engineering email lists.

Michigan Hillel was informed by the University and we are working with them regarding next steps and how to bring our campus community together. We have been assured that the University of Michigan Police Department is actively investigating and will keep us informed of their progress.

The messages sent to our students were deeply disturbing and upsetting to our Jewish community. It is important that we come together in this moment to show this kind of hate will not be tolerated. Hate has no place on our campus. As Leaders and Best, we will not be defined by these hateful messages but rather by the way we come together in response to them, showing our support for one another.

We stand with all students and faculty impacted by these emails, and will continue to seek ways to offer support and unite as a campus community.

Staff and student leaders are here for you. Please drop by Hillel anytime today to talk to staff about how you feel impacted by these emails. Student leaders of the Hillel Governing Board will be at Hillel tonight at 7pm if you would like to talk.

Already planned for this week is a JEngA (Jewish Engineering Students Association) Shabbat dinner upstairs at Hillel. We invite our Jewish engineers to use this space to come together as a community and invite your friends to our warm Shabbat environment.

Sincerely,
Tilly Shames, Executive Director

Bob Stone, Chair, Board of Trustees

Joshua Blum (’18), Chair, Governing Board
