Gifts of Stock

Thank you for thinking of our Hillel. Donating securities or cryptocurrency are easy and cost-effective ways to support our mission, while also receiving potential tax benefits. All electronic transfers are made safely and securely through our partner agency, the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit (JFMD), and then forwarded to Michigan Hillel.

Reminder: We highly encourage you or your broker to notify us in advance of your donation/transfer so we can ensure JFMD applies your gift to Michigan Hillel. We will need the currency name and/or stock name and number of shares. This information ensures acceptance of delivery and proper acknowledgment for tax purposes.

For cryptocurrency donations:

Cryptocurrency is a new, wise way to donate to your favorite charities. The IRS classifies cryptocurrencies as property, so cryptocurrency donations to 501(c)(3) organizations, like Hillel, receive the same tax treatment as stocks. US crypto donors pay no capital gains taxes on gifts to 501(c)3 organizations that would otherwise trigger taxable events. Often, donating cryptocurrency can be a very tax-efficient form of giving for a donor. We always encourage you to contact your tax advisor for details. Note: Similar to donating stock, your tax receipt will come from the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit as they accept these special gifts on our behalf and then forward them to our organization. Donate here.

For stock transfers:

Inform your broker that you would like to make a gift to Michigan Hillel, by way of JFMD. Either you or your broker should then contact Krin in our office at 734-769-0500 to let us know of your forthcoming transfer. Last, either you or your broker should complete these Stock Transfer Instructions to finalize your transfer. You may also send paperwork to Krin’s attention to our office or via email to krinek@umich.edu.

Should you have any questions during the process, please reach out to Krin Klein at (734) 769-0500 or krinek@umich.edu.
